Skateistan

The skateboard deck painting was created for a Skateistan fundraiser and auction. Skateistan is a co-education skateboarding school in Kabul, Afghanistan that engages urban and internally-displaced youth through skateboarding. The school offers opportunities in cross-cultural interaction, education, and personal empowerment. This deck was auctioned through ebay and the proceeds went to support Skateistan’s mission to help, “young men and women with the skills to lead their communities toward social change and development.” The mountains of the Hindu Kush form the backdrop, while a saffron flower blooms between pieces of twisted and torn metal debris. A hummingbird hovers over the flower as a hopeful symbol of healing, survival and possibility.
